care-cation holiday weekend

Caring can be insulating. Insulation risks isolation. You simply cannot let it.

Do you have plans for the weekend? Well that depends which caring universe you are asking about.

In the living with teen autism microcosm it is about the anxiety of “no school”. For J & T, a Saturday of softball with pizza party and Hershey Park, a Sunday in the mountains with other families living with teen autism, and a Monday at the water park may seem full and fun but that is perspective. Tuesday morning’s school bus is the anxiety buster ticket back to the land of routine.

Sunday’s temperatures were not Multiple Sclerosis friendly so we headed to Hollywood Casino & Penn National Race Course where not only was there air conditioned fun but a free concert by Little River Band.
Patti enjoyed a couple hours of ‘fun’ physical therapy alternating her left and right arms pulling the slot machine levers in the air conditioned adult arcade (smoking permitted) atmosphere at a net expense of $1.22.

After Saturday’s meandering outing, my back enjoyed accessible and level Hollywood Casino. Oddly though it is not the most wheelchair friendly for playing slots. Chairs are bolted to the floor and you need to engage in a time consuming process of getting a security guard to get a maintenance person to remove the chair.

We’ve simply adapted and only play end of aisle machines which Patti can park next to and pull the lever.

Dinner and dessert at Glitterati’s (taste of Italy "Hollywood Style") rounded out the evening.
Ah, the story behind the smiles in this picture … Driving through the garage, stopping to repeatedly rev our van’s engine, the rumble of our van’s exhaust system reinforced by garage acoustics triggered a rolling flourish of car alarms, trumpeting that Patrick and Patti were ‘in the house’! Hey, just because you grow older you do not have to grow up.

Most important of all on this Memorial Day … is to remember those ‘caregivers of our country’ who will never grow older.

Caregivingly Yours, Patrick Leer

  1. I'm glad for Patti, what she pulls out of life no matter what may seem an obstacle. For you I can say, I feel envious at times - you found a way to compromise with the unthinkable. And your advice is wise to those who would seek to find a way out by hiding in that isolation you speak of. How we all can relate on our unique levels! Thank you Patrick, you're a human being I enjoy knowing, and by proxy, those you love.

  2. how fun to hear the Little River Band! glad you guys had a chance to play the "one-arm bandits" as my mom used to call them. Air conditioning in summer/spring heat is always a good thing to have.

always good to remember to honor those who serve our country, indeed
