Ever given mental competency much thought when it comes to elections? I mean outside of wondering about the opposition.
Here in the home of the Liberty Bell there is no voter-competency requirement. However, 80% of states have some type of law limiting voting rights for individuals based on competence. Believe it or not, 6 states bar voting by "idiots" (Arkansas, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Ohio according to Wikipedia).
Mental competency is the proverbial can of worms. This could encompass aging, symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, medications, addictions, and on and on. Who draws this line?
Recently, in our extended story, a certain young adult with autism turned 18 this past summer. Voting and autism has been a topic of conversation. From National Autistic Society (UK), “one of the main reasons people with autism and learning disabilities, in particular, are unable to vote is due to a lack of accessible information and material.” Election 2010: Democracy for disabled people
Patti’s Multiple Sclerosis related cognitive problems (memory, information processing, attention and concentration, executive functions, visual perceptual skills, verbal fluency) could conceivably matter in some States.
Sure she could take the disability mail in option but Patti enjoys voting.
If you are a voter with a cognitive challenge, a caregiver, or know someone, you should know your rights on Tuesday.
Click, open, and if needed, print and take this flyer with you when you go to vote. You can also show this to others if you run into any problems.
Voters with disabilities are entitled to receive any assistance they need to cast their ballots.
As for me, hey Pat Boone robocalled me! I’m dreaming of voting in a pair of white buc shoes on Tuesday!
