For the past three weeks they've been decorating the gift bags and painting the plastic "stained glass" ornaments. I recruited ten moms to bake cookies, 3 dozen each, any kind. Today, the cookies all arrived before Sunday school began. I gathered up all our kids (we only had four, ages 4-9) in attendance today, so those four did all the work) and set them to work bagging all the cookies. Then they dropped a stained glass ornament with a hook into each bag. There were 38 gift bags. I wasn't sure it would be enough, but I thought it should be enough. Just in time for church service to start, the kids carried all the cookie bags into the sanctuary. When it was time for us to do our part, I read a special poem for our dads, then called the kids up. I asked the grand-dads to stand, then the dads, and so on. The kids were thrilled to carry a bag of cookies to each dad. Not a dad left standing without cookies. Every year our church does this. It has become a tradition the dads look forward to (the kids too): homebaked cookies in bags the kids decorated. There were enough for every dad, grand-dad, step-dad, foster-dad, and even uncles to take home a bag of 1 dozen homebaked cookies. Wish I could send you a bag, Patrick! Thanks for reminding us of the history of this day. Happy Fathers Day to you.
