Caregiving: grievances for the disabled and chronically ill?

Who “files grievances” for the chronically ill and disabled? Who “files grievances” for the dead?

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) filed a grievance over the punishments for the 11 dispatchers disciplined for mishandling fire victim Brenda Orr's 911 call.

Brenda Orr, bed bound with Multiple Sclerosis, DIED!!! The 911 dispatchers were “punished” with letters put in their files. And they and their union are complaining??? … Incredulous!

911 dispatchers file grievance over punishment

“...Tom Tosti, the business agent for the union, did not respond to repeated calls for comment...”

  1. From the article.... "They said 10 dispatchers were available to answer Orr's call, but didn't. And the dispatcher who answered Orr's call did so out of frustration, but should not have, Director of Emergency Communications Brent Wiggins said."

... but should not have??  what??  and why not?  what were the other 9 dispatchers doing??  Having a birthday party?

    I just don't get it.....

  2. oh for crying out loud!! I cannot imagine the union would file a grievance over the "punishments" of the 11 dispatchers!! Its an insult to Brenda Orr and to her family; 11 people were directly/indirectly responsible for the loss of a precious woman's life and all the union could do is file a grievance over the discipline of those 11 people? this enrages me and it enrages me that Tom Tosti does not have the "guts" to respond and comment despite repeated call

"Nothing in the employees' contracts prevents them from being fired, but officials said they didn't think the offenses “rose to the level of termination.” - this enraged me too; hello, someone died!! This is not just a slap in the wrist don't do it again, but a little more accountability please people??

sad, just sad, the "value" some people put over other's lives; may I never have to rely on their 911 call system for help

  4. I remember when this tragedy happened, Patrick, thinking the dispatchers were definitely in for not only dismissal but criminal prosecution.  It's painful to look at the paucity of feeling made manifest in what is NOT happening to them.  CATHY
